Remembering Stephen
Today marks the 29 years since the senseless murder of Stephen Lawrence. The thoughts of everyone here at Stop Hate UK are with Doreen and Neville, and all of the Lawrence family.
In 1993, Stephen Lawrence was like most young people: sociable, talented and ambitious; hoping to become an architect.
Tragically, however, Stephen was murdered in an unprovoked, racially-charged attack.
A public enquiry was launched, leading to the publication of the Macpherson Report, coining itself as ‘one of the most important moments in the modern history of criminal justice in Britain’.
Immense cultural perception and societal shifts in attitudes to racism were reflected, in law and in policing, expanding an understanding of discrimination on all levels all the while developing equality legislation and forum.
Eradicating Racism
29 years on, Stephen Lawrence – his tragedy, his legacy – is still very much a part of every single one of us. Justice for Stephen is about all of us in society having justice.
Baroness, Doreen Lawrence, Patron of Stop Hate UK continues to lead the way in ensuring her son’s legacy is one of impactful change and that no other family has to go through what they have experienced – this legacy, and his family’s tireless and dignified fight for justice, truth, and fairness, continues to be an inspiration for all of us.
What we know is that racism thrives when good people say nothing. What is clear is that education and strength in community are essential for social change. At Stop Hate UK, we will continue to fight for a society where everyone is treated with respect.
Our 24/7 helpline services offer vital support to help anyone who has experienced or witnessed racism. Our aim through our educational programmes in schools, training across workplaces, and organisational reviews is to develop a robust response to racist behaviours and support those affected. Effective leadership and actions in organisations is key to reducing the impact of hate and the corrosive division it can create in communities.
We must use Stephen Lawrence’s death to make positive strides to eradicate institutional and systemic racism across the UK and to highlight the incredible work of the Stephen Lawrence Day Foundation.
We all have the power to make a difference.
Stephen may be gone, but he will never be forgotten.
